Most buying advice treats the four Cs as four equal considerations. In practice they are not equal at all. Colour and clarity describe what a diamond is. Cut describes what it does. Understanding the second is what separates a confident purchase from an expensive guess.

Three Optical Effects, Not One

"Sparkle" is a single word doing three jobs. Gemmologists separate them, and once you can see the difference you cannot unsee it.

Brilliance is the return of white light. Light enters through the table, strikes the pavilion facets, bounces internally, and exits back toward your eye. When the geometry is right, most of the light that goes in comes back out the top. When the pavilion is too shallow or too deep, light escapes through the bottom or the sides — the stone leaks.

Fire is dispersion: white light split into spectral colours as it passes through the facet junctions. Fire is what produces those brief flares of orange, blue, and green. It depends heavily on crown angle and the relationship between the crown and the pavilion.

Scintillation is the pattern of light and dark as the stone or the viewer moves. A diamond with good scintillation has a lively, contrasting pattern — bright flashes against dark facets. Too little contrast reads as washed out; too much reads as busy and dull.

A stone can have one of these and lack the others. The finest cutting balances all three, and that balance is a deliberate act of judgement, not an automatic outcome of following a formula.

The Geometry That Matters

Crown and pavilion angles

The single most consequential relationship in a round brilliant is between the crown angle (the slope of the upper facets) and the pavilion angle (the slope of the lower ones). Pavilion angles clustering around 40.6 to 41 degrees, paired with complementary crown angles, tend to produce excellent light return. Deviate meaningfully and you get either a "fish-eye" — a visible grey ring from a shallow pavilion — or a dark centre from a pavilion that is too steep.

Table and depth

Table percentage describes the width of the flat top facet relative to the stone's diameter. Depth percentage describes how deep the stone runs. These two numbers are what most consumers look at because they appear on every report, but they are downstream of the angles. A stone can have textbook table and depth figures and still perform poorly if the angles are mismatched.

Girdle thickness

Too thin and the stone is vulnerable at its most exposed edge. Too thick and weight is hidden where it does nothing for the visible spread. An extremely thick girdle is one of the quieter ways a stone can look smaller than its carat weight suggests.

Polish and symmetry

Facet alignment and surface finish affect how cleanly light travels. Poor symmetry misdirects light; poor polish scatters it at the surface before it ever enters the stone.

Here is the practical consequence: a 1.20-carat stone with mediocre cutting will often look smaller, duller, and less valuable than a 1.00-carat stone cut superbly. The larger stone wins on paper and loses in the room. Pear and marquise shapes live or die on symmetry. A point that sits even slightly off the long axis is visible forever, and no setting hides it.

Cushions vary enormously in faceting pattern, from crushed-ice interiors to chunkier, more defined flashes. These are aesthetic choices, not quality tiers, and they look very different in person than in photographs.

How to Actually Evaluate a Stone

Showrooms are lit to flatter. That is not deception — it is display — but it means you should take deliberate steps to see past it.

Look in three lighting conditions. Under focused spotlights nearly everything sparkles. Ask to see the stone near a window or under diffuse ambient light. That is where cut quality separates.

Tilt it. Rock the stone slowly. Watch for dead zones — regions that go dark and stay dark. Good cutting maintains life through movement.

Step back. Hold it at the distance people will actually see it: across a table, at arm's length. Loupe-level inclusions are irrelevant at conversational distance.

Once you understand that performance is engineered, the setting stops being decoration and becomes part of the optical system. A basket that blocks light from entering the pavilion dims the stone. Prongs placed without regard for the facet pattern create shadows. A halo set too tightly can compete with the centre rather than frame it. A diamond is unusual among purchases in that its appeal is entirely optical and entirely permanent. Which is a reasonable argument for slowing down. See more stones than you think you need to. Compare deliberately, in bad light as well as good. Ask why one costs more than another and require a real answer.
