EA provided minimal direction beyond the advice to coaches and players that the match was "must win". The game didn't need an extra edge. "Just like in a real game, players were subbed between turns, we were able to capture tired defenders as well as fresh forwards as the game grew," recalls Eaves.

"You felt the anger. There were many fouls in the opening five minutes - it was exactly what we wanted."

Those off-the-ball movements including shouting, pointing and posturing - were priceless for EA in recording the intensity and physicality of a real-life sport.

"If a stuntman slide tackles an opponent in a motion capture area and the player is able to return and it's not as intense as the intensity of a real-life challenge," explains Eaves.

"In this game there is a real physical challenge. We can take the player's anger and turn it into our own game.
